1847: Death of Germinal Pierre Dandelin, Belgian mathematician (born 1794) and personal friend of Adolphe Quetelet

1899: The ship Belgica that was frozen in the ice, is pulled loose. After being stranded for 347 days in Antarctica (first expedition to overwinter), they had to dig a channel several hundred metres long in the ice using saws and explosives to reach open water.
