1906: The Wright brothers obtain US patent no. 821,393 for their "Flying-Machine". This patent did not merely cover the addition of an engine but focused primarily on the three-axis control method (pitch, roll, and yaw) a fundamental innovation that finally allowed an aircraft to be flown in a stable and controlled manner.
