1958: The satellite Explorer 1, the first American spacecraft, ceases to emit signals after its batteries are exhausted. During its four months of activity, it enabled the discovery of the Van Allen radiation belts, zones of charged particles trapped by the Earth’s magnetic field. This mission transformed our understanding of the space environment and our planet’s magnetic protection.
