1618: Johannes Kepler discovers the third law of planetary motion. After some initial calculations, he soon rejects the idea, but on May 15 confirms the discovery. This third law expresses that the farther a planet is from the Sun, the longer its orbital period.

1979: Discovery of the first extraterrestrial volcano on Io, a moon of Jupiter, by the Voyager Spacecraft.
