1539: Birth of Christopher Clavius, German mathematician (died 1612). Often called the "Euclid of the 16th century," he was the main architect of the Gregorian calendar we use today.

1655: Christiaan Huygens discovers Titan, Saturn's largest satellite. Huygens made this discovery using a telescope he designed himself.
